Kurinuki Cup — №1

Thrown thick, then carved away. These cups take their cue from kurinuki — the Japanese method of cutting a vessel from a solid block of clay. Each one is thrown with thick walls, then carved back facet by facet, so the cuts decide the form and no two cups are ever identical.

The clay is my usual reclaimed speckled stoneware, its mineral flecking showing wherever it's left raw. Three glazes are dripped in combination over the carved exterior, breaking across the facets; the inside is fully glazed for everyday drinking.
